To colonize the Old World after it “originated” in the New World. It seems inconceivable for creatures as small as spiders to play Columbus, but they did. Their ships were rafts of vegetation, a short article in Nature said this week (Nature 485, 31 May 2012, p. 550, doi:10.1038/485550a). “A family of harvestmen that inhabits tropical forests on both sides of the Pacific Ocean originated in Mesoamerica roughly 82 million years ago,” the journal claimed. “The arachnids’ migration is a rare example of a trans-Pacific dispersal.”A genetic comparison of harvestmen from old and new worlds led Harvard scientists to conclude that the spiders got from Brazil to Indo-Pacific islands. “The creatures probably did not disperse through the break-up of the supercontinent Gondwana, so the authors speculate that they made their way across the Pacific on floating vegetation carried by ocean currents.”Let’s see if the evolutionary explanation makes sense. The spiders, we are told, “originated” in Mesoamerica. That’s really helpful, isn’t it? How did the world form? It originated. Why is there air? It originated. Where did the philosophy of origins come from? It originated. Try that at home; even your kids know you’re dodging their question.Next, we are told that the migration across the ocean is “a rare example of a trans-Pacific dispersal.” You don’t say. No kidding; once in 82 million years is pretty rare. What could have gotten into those little spidey brains in that one generation to make them want to colonize new worlds? Is this a new law of nature? If so, we should see them hopping on vegetation rafts all the time, mixing their genomes up between continents, not doing it once after originating.Evolutionists tell their tales this way because they’ve anchored their thoughts to an imaginary timeline Darwin needed, with its millions and millions of years. In their tale, a supercontinent (that “originated” who knows how) had to break up at a certain time. The spiders, who “originated” after MesoAmerica “originated,” couldn’t have just ridden the drifting continent, so they had to swim or take a cruise ship. Whatever “the authors speculate” to keep the story intact (with its millions of years) gets sanctified as science these days. These are the same people who will scoff at the Biblical Flood story as nonsense, saying there is no possible way for animals to get from the Middle East to the rest of the world. When a creation scientist offers the possibility that some of them floated on mats of vegetation, the laughter gets rip-roarin’ crazy.
It would be an especially bold move for Amazon to apply this model to phones: Bypassing the typical carrier service-plan requirements, buying wholesale data capacity directly from AT&T (as it’s doing here, and as it does for the 3G Kindle), and charging a lot less for an entry-level smartphone plan than its competition.Imagine, for instance, an Amazon phone with no monthly voice-plan requirement, fair pricing on data plans and unlimited text messaging. It could conceivably cost half what an iPhone does per month, running on the same AT&T LTE network. And this would help Amazon win with its customers and turn gadgets into services. But: This would be risky and challenging, even for Amazon. And Bezos may decide that the distribution power that carriers have — especially domestically — is too great to fight. (That’s the lesson Google learned with the Nexus One.) Perhaps a halfway-there, hybrid approach? Then again, don’t put anything past Jeff Bezos: If any company is ballsy enough to try an end run on the carriers, it’s Amazon. Either way, if this week’s Kindle Fire announcement is any lesson, expect aggressive, ad-subsidized pricing and a service-focused approach with an Amazon phone. And maybe — just maybe — a bold move to disintermediate the phone companies. Also: The Real Reason AT&T And Verizon Are Pushing New “Shared” Data Plans Aggressive Prices So Amazon And Its Customers WinMobile pricing and profit models for mobile devices set Amazon and Apple apart. Apple makes money selling iPhones at tremendous profit and breaks even on media and app sales. Amazon prices its hardware closer to breakeven and hopes to profit on media sales.Bezos gave some context to Amazon’s strategy this week, after introducing the moderately priced $299 large-screen Kindle Fire HD.“Above all else, align with customers. Win when they win. Win only when they win,” he said. How does this apply to hardware pricing?“We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices,” Bezos said. “If someone buys one of our devices and puts it in a desk drawer and never uses it, we don’t deserve to make any money.”Jumping from there to a phone, Amazon is probably preparing one that’s inexpensive by industry standards, one that’s designed so that buyers will keep using it to buy Amazon media, products and services.Depending on how Amazon distributes its phone — directly or through telcos — Amazon could offer a no-contract phone for $200 or a carrier’s standard contract phone for free.Expect Amazon to use some of its Kindle Fire tricks, too, such as ad-supported subsidies from its special-offers program. The Boldest Move: Going Around The Carriers? One of Amazon’s interesting announcements Thursday was a 4G LTE wireless version of the Kindle Fire HD, with a special (low!) price for data service. Unlike other tablets — including the iPad — which require a relationship with a wireless carrier, Amazon seems to be stepping in front of the carriers here, billing customers directly for 4G service — at least for the basic package, which includes 250 MB of monthly service for a $50 annual fee. (“Customers can also choose to upgrade to 3 GB or 5 GB data plans from AT&T directly from the device,” notes Amazon.) The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Amazon did not unveil a smartphone Thursday, despite speculation to the contrary. But its new Kindle Fire tablets give us some clues about an Amazon phone, reportedly in the pipeline. We see a $200 (almost) loss leader that makes buying anything from or through Amazon beyond easy.An All-Amazon-Controlled ExperienceThe idea that Amazon will put a few of its apps on a generic Android phone and call it a day is misplaced. Amazon will control every aspect of its phone, from the way the home screen looks to the way it ties into Amazon’s Kindle bookstore, video-streaming service and music cloud locker. Why?Speaking Thursday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said, “People don’t want gadgets anymore. They want services. They want services that improve over time.”Bezos explainted, “Kindle Fire is a service. What does it mean for a hardware device to be a service? It greets you by name. It comes out of the box with your content preloaded. You can choose from 22 million different items. It makes recommendations for you. […] A hardware device as a service. That’s what people want.”Amazon is all about the experience, front to back — much like Apple. Expect total Amazon control over any phone it makes. While a cacophony of protests rose against the anti-ritualistic attack on religion in Umesh Shukla’s ‘Oh My God’, the film’s leading man and co-producer Paresh Rawal remains unfazed. The film is an adaptation of his Gujarati play ‘Kanji Virrudh Kanji’ and features him as an atheist.”There was no fear of backlash at all. We were always very sure of what we were saying and doing on ritualistic religion and the way it controls the life of the common man,” said Paresh.”I had performed the same story in play form in front of a thousand audience for 150 shows in Gujarati and Hindi repeatedly. The play has also been performed in Punjabi and English. We never had any protests,” Paresh stressed.”A live audience could’ve easily expressed it’s displeasure at our ideas in the play. Not once did we face any protest. So, I knew we were on stable ground with the film. There was no one throwing shoes in any of the shows. Audiences from the older and younger generations have appreciated the idea beyond the play,” he added.Paresh isn’t bothered with the spate of protests against the film.”Even in Punjab we’ve been able to release the film almost everywhere. The protestors are seeing and hearing what they want to. And if we are daunted by protests, we’d never be able to extend the reach and impact of the visual medium, be it theatre, television or cinema,” said the 62-year-old.Though the actor believes in God in real-life, he rues that religion is now being merchandised in the country.advertisement”I believe in God. But the costly ways recommended to reach him are wrong. Just who benefits from all the showy rituals, I don’t know,” he said.It is being said that the film’s co-producer Akshay Kumar, who nursed a life-long ambition of playing God, pushed his way into the film. However, Paresh gives him a clean chit.”It was really sporting of him to agree to feature in a film where a character actor like me played the lead. He believed in the theme,” he said. The critics have loved film, but Paresh doesn’t see himself as a saleable star.”I am not being modest when I say I don’t see producers putting a 50-crore film on my shoulder. It may happen in the future. One never knows,” he added.More on Oh My GodOMG Oh My God! collections see huge jumpOMG Oh My God! is doing well at the Box Office. Despite India VS Pakistan match on Sunday, the movie was well received.OMG: Oh My God! movie reviewGod as a Bollywood hero is obviously not much of a casting headache if Akshay Kumar is on board as actor-co producer in your film. The dapper star has the look, the grin, the screen presence and fan power. Put him on a superbike or give him a bansuri to play, Akshay is just the right fit as Krishna Vasudev Yadav from Mathura. OMG: Oh My God! however sees the screen god make space for an actor who has basically made his mark over the decades playing out more mere mortal avatars. If Paresh Rawal’s credibility as an actor has never been doubted, OMG – a film he incidentally co-produces with Akshay – sees him take centrestage as star of the show. That bit is interesting. As a comedian, Paresh has often hijacked the limelight from bigger names in multistarrers. Yet, the only starring roles he has had till date have come in serious films – Sardar and Tamanna. OMG is special in that sense. This is his first lead role in a comedy setup. Oh My God is for god fearing people: Mithun ChakrabortyOh My God is not against any religion but a comedy-drama that will help people to understand the need to love god, says Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty, who acts as a godman in the film.”I play the character of a godman in the film and I have realise that we worship god because we are afraid of him. We actually worship our superstitions lying inside us. Through this film, we want to spread the message that if we love god whole-heartedly then he will eradicate every problem of us,” says the 62-year-old National Award winning actor.Oh My God not for money: Akshay KumarAkshay Kumar says his next production Oh My God, inspired by Gujarati play Kanji Virrudh Kanji, has not been made with the intention of making money. The project was a result of pure passion for the concept, says the actor.advertisementWatch the trailer: “‘Oh My God’ is not a film which I made to earn money. It’s a film which I loved, enjoyed it because I enjoyed the play and what I learnt from the play, I just wanted to share with the audience and that is why I just made this film,” the 45-year-old said here.

There are always going to be times when they are not going to be happy when we are not winning, that’s obvious. Today they were brilliant from the warm-ups to when we left the pitch.”We want to keep those performances up for them, the staff, the players and keep building on what we showed. We have lots of games coming up over the Christmas period and it is about recovering in the right way and we just have to concentrate on each game coming up and not look too far ahead.”

Now Jared Goff and Co. head into an actual road game against another future Hall of Fame quarterback, Drew Brees. With a perfect season still a possibility halfway through this NFL campaign, it’s reasonable to wonder where the Rams rank among the best teams in football. The Rams’ record has escaped attention largely because no one is surprised when they win. They dominated the offseason by spending $237 million in guaranteed contracts, while only one other team, the Minnesota Vikings, even topped $200 million.1And they, unlike the Rams, bought a franchise quarterback. As a result, the Rams were the preseason favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. But heightened preseason expectations don’t always translate into wins, particularly for a non-Patriots team: Just ask the 2011 Eagles, whose self-proclaimed “Dream Team” went up in smoke, losing eight of their first 12 games. The Rams clearly are meeting even their most optimistic expectations. The offense is better than last year under the tutelage of head coach Sean McVay, who is taking the “genius” moniker to a whole new level. The Rams are leading the NFL in yards per pass play, and they’re also top five in yards per rush. They’re the only team in football that has had more than half of its offensive plays qualify as a success by either resulting in a first down or effectively setting up the next down, according to ESPN Stats & Information Group. The Los Angeles defense has not quite lived up to its price tag, ranking 27th in yards allowed per rush and 15th in yards allowed per pass play. But the Rams’ D ranks 10th in Football Outsiders’ Defense-adjusted Value Over Average.2DVOA is a statistic that “measures a team’s efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent.” And in the key stats of net yards per pass attempt3Offensive yards per pass attempt minus defensive yards per pass attempt. and net play success,4The percentage of snaps that result in a first down or effectively set up the next down versus that of your opponent. the Rams comfortably lead the NFL.But while the Rams are convincingly the best team in football, they’re not standing out among similar teams since the NFL expanded to 16 games in 1978. They have scored 109 more points than they’ve allowed, which ranks tied for 26th through eight games since 1978. And it’s oddly just one point better than last year’s Rams, who failed to win a playoff game.If we limit our search to just unbeaten teams since 1978, the Rams rank tied for 10th out of 20 teams in point differential. And just one of the nine teams behind them on that list ended up winning the Super Bowl: the 1990 Giants. It’s also reasonable to ask if the Rams are peaking too soon — at least based on recent returns. The last season with an 8-0 team was 2015, when there were three (the Patriots, Bengals and Panthers) — none of which won the Super Bowl. The same disappointment eventually befell the 2013 Chiefs, 2012 Falcons and 2011 Packers. The last team to actually win a Super Bowl after being undefeated at the halfway point was the 2009 Saints, who beat another former 8-0 team (that eventually went to 14-0), the Colts. Before 2009, early dominance in a season seemed to be more predictive. Five of the 11 8-0 teams since 1978 went on to win the Super Bowl, and two more advanced to the final game. The Rams would probably prefer the postseason to start today. But absent that, a win on Sunday would virtually lock up the coveted No. 1 seed in the conference less than a week into November. It’s sometimes said in the NFL that Super Bowls are won in December (even though that’s often untrue), but the Rams are a win away from setting themselves up for something almost unheard of in today’s hotly contested, parity-driven league: being able to take the entire month of December off.The downside to that is the tons of potential down time waiting for the postseason to start. In fact, the biggest decision that McVay may have to make down the stretch won’t involve play-calling or game management but when to rest his starters — which he did last year before the playoffs and also this year in the preseason. Then again, home-field advantage may not mean much to the Rams. There’s a very good chance that the vast majority of fans in attendance at Rams home games — even during the playoffs — will be rooting for the other team.Check out our latest NFL predictions.
